Weekly Photo Challenge: Time

February 7, 2016 § 14 Comments

Making a Year of the Monkey card – began with monkey doodling to get a fun expression. I had the size of the card already laid out on the toned paper, so I enlarged the monkey I liked best to nearly fill the 5 x 7″ area, then did some cutting and taping it into a fun pose as if it were a hinged paper puppet. I’ve been ‘drawing’ this way for several years now. I can watch the overall effect as I slightly separate say, the head from the body or a leg out a bit – till I “see” what I want. It’s very fun. Like slo-mo animation without having to draw a gazillion frames of action. I transfer that drawing to the final paper.

This is my fourth Chinese New Year card. I have a look to them. Some part of the animal is a pop-up over the center fold of the card with a bright red painted border all around, and the little Squiggle Girl is featured somehow “imagining” being the animal, with her red Squiggle ribbon. She is the main character in several children’s picture books written by Carole Lexa Schaefer and illustrated by myselfThe Squiggle; Random House 1996, our first collaboration – still in print in paperback – turns 20 this year!!

I use Gouache (“goo-wash”, an opaque watercolor) for the bright painted colors. And every time I dip my brush in the water jar I’m reminded of the beginning of the film, “Miss Potter”, starring Rene Zellweger, about the children’s book author/illustrator, Beatrix Potter. Watch the opening credits some time and you’ll see what I mean. The camera zeroes in on her loaded brush touching the water…swirling color like magic…that’s what it feels like to paint. Sends me every time!

The Squiggle Girl is outlined with a black Faber-Castell “C” calligraphy pen, then colored in with Berol Prismacolor ArtMarkers, her ribbon, too. That’s a nifty pen-like adjustable stick eraser by Staedtler I’m using.

I took this to a local print shop where it was copied on their fancy color copier on glossy card stock. They trimmed around my red lines with a heavy duty cutting machine. Once home I scored through that middle red line. Then I cut around Monkey’s tail and foot with a trusty #11 blade in my x-Acto knife…

Add a cocktail umbrella and it’s Monkey on Parade all year long * FUN * FRIENDS * FAMILY * PLAYFUL PRODUCTIVITY * INSTINCTIVELY WILD CLEVERNESS *

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!  xo Pierr
