The baby Barn Swallows are growing fast. Fluffing out with feathers of defined coloring and more movement, the nest is getting smaller.
Especially since there are FIVE babies, not the four that I’ve been seeing for over a week now. Look closely at this next shot – see the tail feathers on the far right? That is baby #5 jockeying for position.
The parents are flying in feeding shifts, three or four times a minute. Then there’s a lapse of two or three minutes where the babies hunker down, their heads between their shoulders, till a flutter of wings reaches them again and they strain their necks for the catch. The two in the middle stretch so high and open their beaks so wide it looks to me on the ground as if they’ll fall from being top heavy.
