Whoo-whoo! Interview for WHO’S THERE?

Read Erika Rohrbach’s blog today in the Children’s section of Kirkus Reviews and learn all about the story behind the story of WHO’S THERE? Carole Lexa Schaefer’s and my new book!
I used gouache (“gwosh” – an opaque watercolor) and ink, in a resist technique, for the illustrations in WHO’S THERE? The process is pictured on my website, pierrmorgan.com Once there, click on “Workshops & School Visits” and then “Gouache & Ink Resist.”
This is the surprise part, the “happy accident” stage – where the painted and inked piece is washed off under running water. I’m never quite sure how things will look, as the process depends on how paint and ink were applied – order and thickness – and the staining quality of the pigments. I like that. Not knowing.
Keeps things loose and playful, and reveals a look I never would have thought of otherwise. For example the ink sticking to the footboard of the bed. At first I had an impulse to paint it out, paint over it with green. But after looking at it (and leaving it alone for a while), I decided it fit the noises-in-the-night ambiance of Carole’s story.
And with Nancy Brennan’s stellar book text and titling design at Viking, BunBun & Boo and their Cinderella Bed – as Nancy calls it – all look great!
