Porch Leasees

Barn Swallow Couple

They arrived April 28 and have been sleeping in the rafters of my front porch and discussing architectural design early each morning. Just this week they began to build their condo. It’s the largest foundation I’ve seen yet. Maybe they’ve got plans for a big family.

Last year the Swallow couple actually abandoned their first home halfway through the summer and built another tucked up in a corner far away from front door traffic which included night visits from a leaping black cat.

Two or three years ago a couple had two sets of five chicks each and we had that big snow that stayed around for a while – 15 inches in my driveway. Coincidence? Maybe.

The current couple has signed a six month lease, though I’ll be surprised if they stay past September 30th. I’ll keep you posted.

End of the World

I have 3 minutes till the End of the World. It takes me longer than that to load a photo but I’ll hurry. In case we get cut off – I’ll see you on the other side. It’s been wonderful. Here are some things I’d like to remember.

2 Stones

May 20, 2011 § 2 Comments

Walked the beach today looking for lightning. That’s right. A bolt of Aha. Strike of Inspiration. A jolt to make me go.  Here’s what I found.

Both are wishing stones. The white stripe all the way around. The top one I nearly walked right past but for its uncanny likeness to a – yes – lightning bolt! Though it seems to be striking up or maybe I have the stone upside down (it is pyramid shaped so sits nice and solid as it is here). Either way, it’s something that’s had my brain wheels turning all day.

The stone at the bottom reminds me of a birthday cake…at sea…on the horizon line. But it also looks like a ship or an island with moving clouds overhead.  Or icing. Yeah, nope – it’s a cake. A party every day.
