Dorothy’s or Cinderella’s?

April 12, 2011 § 2 Comments

Not Dorothy’s – she never let those Ruby Slippers off her feet. Even as she slept. Not Cinderella’s. Her missing shoe by all accounts these days, was made of glass (though the proper pronunciation of the word in Perrault’s telling translates as squirrel fur).

Today’s sturdy find, a concretion, is fashioned from a mineral cement – and a bit of earthen magic – that works the clay cliffs here night and day.

Concretion - Admiralty Bay, Whidbey Island WA

It was ironic, really. I’d been walking on the beach for quite a while taking photos not really excited about my discoveries, so I gave up and just before the stairs, I saw this. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t seen it before. But then–I’d been too busy looking somewhere else.
