Outside the Coupeville Library

In the fourth grade we studied the names of the clouds. We sketched them and kept a notebook. I loved knowing their names. My brothers had a record – remember that, Brandt? – “What makes the thunder, what makes the rain, what makes the…??…come again?” I don’t remember how the rest of it goes or what else was on the recording. Do you? One thing I learned today is the name of the man who named the clouds. Luke Howard. Check it out. And the related links. The Weather Notebook’s Nationally Syndicated Radio Show is – alas – no longer, but maybe something similar (I haven’t researched)? and loads of sites with photos and information about clouds and their weather.

Meanwhile I’ll sit here a bit longer and watch. That one stratus mid-left is almost a cheetah running. See that? Going really fast – front and hind legs stretched way out. . . . now here’s the light show.

Yes, Pierr, I DO remember that little ditty: “What makes th weather, what makes the weather, what makes the rain and sleet and snow? What makes the weather, what makes the weather, what makes the weather come and go? . . .

    The atmosphere is made of
    Dust and water vapor
    And different kinds of gases
And one of them is oxygen,
    The oxygen we’re BREATH-ING IN!

Etc. Etc. Etc. Just keep singing, and the weather will keep doing its thing. Together we’ll keep making the earth turn and everything will be all right!
