Portrait Ta-da!

Now for one finishing touch – dull the buttah…

Palette from left: Yellow Ochre; Cadmium Yellow Pale; Titanium White; French Ultramarine; Alizarin Crimson
A nifty way to tone down a color without using black is to mix its exact compliment in color and in value and mix the two together. So I mixed up some ‘Buttah’ again, using Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Pale and Titanium White. Then I mixed a violet that same value – lightness on the gray scale – using teensy bits of French Ultramarine and Alizarin Crimson added to a dollop of Titanium White until the paleness of the violet was the same paleness of the ‘Buttah.’ Here you see the result of the two mixed together…
Slightly darker than the original Buttah – but I like it a lot better as an overall background. Jake and his Master do too. They look savvy and sophisticated surrounded by it. Thanks so much for your interest. I’ve enjoyed painting that much more knowing you were there…here! - Pierr (that rhymes)

It was so interesting watching you paint this. I could never do it, but loved being an observer. When do you deliver it to Jake and his master?
Jan
Thanks, Jan. Glad you enjoyed the process. I’ll give this last layer another week or so to dry. Probably March.
Nicely done Pierr! Thanks for sharing this project with us. It’s been fun to see how it has all come together. I hope Jake and his owner send you a photo of it proudly displayed above their fireplace
Thanks so much, Nay!
So cool. It has really been fun watching this. I can’t wait to watch the next project!
Thanks, Marla. Me too! I’ve got momentum going and a sweet corner in my new studio for oil painting so stay tuned.
Congratulations Pierr! An excellent portrait.
Hello William – thanks so much! I’m so honored by your words. You are a master. Your videos and commentary on your work through the process are fascinating and valuable learning tools. You actually inspired me to start sharing my process through this portrait and it turned out to be a wonderful experience which I intend to repeat! Thanks again. – Pierr
You’ve conveyed the essence of sophistication of your subjects beautifully! We have a dog who I swear would wear a smoking jacket if he could, lol
Bravo!
Haha! Smokes a pipe too? Thank you, dancingantelope, for the compliment.
I didn’t realize it had been so long that I checked on the progress with this painting
project. It turned out fabulous. I’m just sure it was greatly appreciated.
Thank you, Lisa, it was. And I didn’t realize it’s been so long since I started in on another painting! I’ll have to do something about that…
